Life, the universe and everything

OK so as we only get on average about 900 months in the West before our number is up I thought I dedicate this blog to musing about the meaning of life etc etc.

Before we begin a little on where I'm coming from...

Had a typical, although rare these days, Anglican upbringing. Went to the local C of England church until I went to University. Generally consisted of stiffling yawns and listening to folksy sermons on gardening and the Good Samaritan. Had a brief flirtation with the happy-clappy local Baptist church with its tambourines, guitars and hymns on overhead projector slides lured several very attractive girls at a time when I was going through a particularly dry spell in the dating game.

University came and went and with it the discovery of alcohol and other distractions. For most of this time I was at best agnostic at worst just indifferent. Anyway never could quite go the whole hog and opt for atheism.

Rediscovered my faith about 3 years back partly in response to grappling with the 'big' questions. Not that I anymore have the answers today than I ever did... so anway I'd describe myself as a liberal Christian, more Vicar of Dibley than your hell-fire and damnation brigade, certainly not a literalist but still very much on a journey that I hope will bring some certitudes if not the answers to everything.

"Why are we here, what's life all about?
Is God really real, or is there some doubt?
What's the point of all this hoax?
Is it the chicken and the egg time, Are we just yolks?
Or perhaps we're just one of God's little jokes.
Is life just a game where we make up the rules,
While we're searching for something to say,
Or are we just simply spiralling coils of self-replicating DNA?
In this life, what is our fate?
Is there Heaven and Hell? Do we reincarnate?
Is mankind evolving or is it too late?
For millions this life is a sad vale of tears,
sitting round with nothing to say,
while scientists say we're just spiralling coils, of self-replicating DNA.
So just why, why are we here? And just what, what, what, what do we fear?
Well çe soir, for a change, it will all be made clear,
For this is the Meaning of Life"
(Monty Python, 'The Meaning of Life')
